Stationary wheelchair clear floor space: 30" × 48"

HUD FHA Design Manual Ch 5 §Section 4 reach geometry

Description

The ANSI A117.1 stationary-wheelchair clear floor space is 30" × 48". This is the design-time geometry for one wheelchair user without movement. Used to size: a) approach to controls/outlets, b) approach to fixtures, c) clear-floor zone in bathrooms / kitchens at activity centers. Forward approach = perpendicular to wall, side approach = parallel to wall.

Why this exists

This is the foundational dimension behind every other reach + maneuver clearance in the FHA + NKBA + ICC accessibility standards. Knowing 30" × 48" by heart is how an architect spots an accessible plan at sketch time.
