NKBA 4th ed §1.5 Clear Floor Space at Activity Centers

Description

A minimum clear floor space of 30"-32" wide × 48"-52" deep should be provided at all planned activity centers (sink, range, cooktop, vanity, toilet, fixtures). Clear floor space is center-lined with the fixture, may overlap between fixtures, but must not be obstructed by door swings, cabinetry, casework, or other equipment.

Why this exists

30"-32" is the wheelchair footprint; 48"-52" gives forward-approach depth. Overlap between adjacent activity centers is allowed because users occupy one center at a time; door swings can't share the space because the door physically blocks it.
