Work-zone clearance: 48-52" wide; 60-67" if wheelchair-using
NKBA 4th ed §1.6 Work Zone Clearances at Activity CentersDescription
Unobstructed work-zone clearance at an activity center is 48"-52" wide for an ambulatory user. To accommodate a wheelchair / mobility-aid, the work zone needs 60"-67" wide for a turning circle or to pass-by. Add an 8"-10" buffer between the activity center and an adjacent wall/obstacle.
Why this exists
48"-52" is the standing-and-bending envelope at counter-height tasks. 60"-67" is the wheelchair turning-circle minimum (per ANSI A117.1). The wall buffer prevents bumping a hip or shoulder while turning.
