CodeMandatory
Hallways at least 3 ft (36 in) wide
2025 RCNYS §R318.6 Hallway widthDescription
Hallways must be at least 36 in wide. This is the residential-code minimum — narrower hallways are not allowed even where the architect would prefer to save floor area.
Why this exists
36 in is also the minimum width for an accessible-route hallway. Architects designing for universal design often go to 42 in (preferred wheelchair circulation) or 44 in (allows two people to pass). 36 in is the floor.
