Handrails: 34-38 in height, 1¼-2 in graspable, 1½ in wall clearance, continuous for the flight

2025 RCNYS §R320 Handrails — height, projection, grip, continuity

Description

Handrails (required on stairways and ramps) must be 34-38 in tall measured from the sloped tread-nosing line. The handrail must project no more than 4½ in into the stair (6½ in at passing flights). At least 1½ in clearance must separate the handrail from any adjacent wall. The handrail must be CONTINUOUS for the full length of the flight, returning to itself or a wall/guard at the ends. Grip: Type I circular handrails 1¼-2 in outside diameter; non-circular profiles must have a finger recess for graspability.

Why this exists

Handrails save lives in stair falls. The 34-38 in height suits most adult shoulder-to-grip ergonomics; the 1¼-2 in grip lets a small hand close around it. Architects designing stair details should specify Type I round profile unless a specific aesthetic drives Type II — Type II grip sizing is more constrained and costlier.
