Rooftop PV: structural design for snow + dead, fire classification matches roof, emergency-access pathways

2025 RCNYS §R329 Solar PV — pathways + access

Description

Rooftop-mounted PV systems must be structurally designed to support: (1) panel dead load + snow load (Table R301.2), and (2) panel-removed dead load + roof live or snow load whichever is greater. PV systems must match the roof's fire classification (Section R902). Roof penetrations must be flashed + sealed per Chapter 9. Emergency-access pathways and setbacks are required so the fire service can cut access if the building is on fire (R329.6).

Why this exists

PV is now common enough that the structural + fire-service implications must be part of every roof design. Architects specifying PV should coordinate with the structural engineer on the snow + PV load case AND with the roofing spec on a Class-A-compatible PV system.
