Roof + ceiling must form continuous ties across the structure to prevent rafter thrust
2025 RCNYS §R802.2 Roof + ceiling assembly continuous tiesDescription
The roof and ceiling assembly must provide continuous ties across the structure (perpendicular to the rafter direction) to prevent rafter thrust — the outward push that opposing rafters exert on bearing walls. Ceiling joists laid parallel to the rafters serve as the tie; perpendicular ceiling joists require rafter ties per R802.5.2. Without ties, rafter thrust pushes top plates outward.
Why this exists
This is the FOUNDATIONAL principle of a stick-framed gable roof. Architects opening a ceiling to a cathedral / vaulted geometry MUST replace the lost ties with: structural ridge beam (eliminates thrust), high collar ties (work with significant rafter overlap), or a structural ridge + posts. 'Cathedral the family room' is a frequent surprise re-engineering ask — plan it from the start.
