Attic access: opening ≥ 22 × 30 in for attics with ≥ 30 in vertical clearance
2025 RCNYS §R807.1 Attic access openingDescription
Buildings with attics having a vertical height of 30 in or more (over an area at least 30 sqft) must have an access opening at least 22 × 30 in. The access opening must be located in a hallway or other readily accessible location. The minimum unobstructed headroom in the attic above the access must be 30 in.
Why this exists
The 22×30 opening is the size of standard pull-down attic stairs. Architects designing low-pitch roofs should confirm a 30+ in vertical clearance somewhere (often only over the load-bearing partitions); if not, plan an exterior gable-end access door instead.
