Rule of thumbRecommended

Deck size: 8 × 10 ft (small dining); 12 × 16 ft (dining + lounge); 20 × 20 ft (entertain 8-12)

ROT/EXT-DECK-SIZE-BY-PROGRAM

Description

Deck sizing by program: 8 × 10 ft fits a 4-person dining table OR a small lounge cluster. 12 × 16 ft fits BOTH a dining table AND a lounge area. 20 × 20 ft supports entertaining 8-12 — multiple seating zones, grill station. The relationship to the indoor room matters: align the deck dimension parallel to the door it serves so the indoor/outdoor flow works.

Why this exists

Decks are commonly sized by what 'fits the budget' rather than what the use program needs. Architects should ask the same question for decks as for indoor rooms: 'How many people, doing what?' Then size from the furniture.
