Glossary

Architectural drafting uses precise terms that overlap in casual speech. Here's how we use them on this site:

Plan symbol
The visual graphic that represents an element on a floor plan — a door swing arc, a toilet outline, a range with burner circles. The umbrella term used in NCS V7 and AIA references.
Fixture
Built-in equipment: toilet, sink, range, water heater. NKBA's term, and a subcategory of plan symbols.
Furnishing
Movable items: bed, sofa, dining table. Distinct from fixtures because they can be relocated; another subcategory of plan symbols.
Line type
Drafting convention for line weight + style — solid heavy for exterior walls, dashed for overhead beams, etc. Distinct from symbols.
Hatch pattern
Fill pattern indicating material — cross-hatch for cut walls, dots for concrete. Also distinct from symbols.
Annotation
Text + dimension labels on plans (room labels, dimension strings, north arrow, scale bar). Plan-symbol category in our catalog but distinct from physical building elements.
